Why Gold Needs to Be the New Pink: Childhood Cancer Awareness in 2025

In every store, every commercial, every fundraiser – we see pink. Pink has become the color of hope, strength, and awareness. But did you know that gold is the color that represents childhood cancer?

Sadly, most people don’t.

In 2025, we believe it’s time for that to change. Gold needs to be the new pink. Not because one cause is more important than the other, but because kids deserve just as much attention, support, and research funding.

What Does Gold Represent?

Gold stands for strength, courage, and resilience—qualities we see every day in children battling cancer. It’s bright. It’s bold. And it reflects how precious children are.

The gold ribbon is the official symbol for childhood cancer awareness, just like the pink ribbon is for breast cancer. But while the pink ribbon is instantly recognizable, the gold ribbon still flies under the radar for many.

We want to change that. We want September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, to glow with as much power and purpose as October does.

Why Gold Matters

Every year, over 17,000 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer. It’s the #1 disease-related cause of death in children, and yet childhood cancer receives only 4% of federal cancer research funding. (Yes, still just 4% in 2025.)

Because it’s often less visible in the media, childhood cancer doesn’t get the same level of public support or corporate sponsorships. Families fighting this disease often feel alone.

Gold matters because kids matter. And when you see a gold ribbon, we want you to think:

  • “How can I help?”
  • “What can I learn?”
  • “Who can I support?”

Sammy’s Story: Turning Awareness Into Action

Back in 2012, a little boy named Sammy was diagnosed with cancer. His friends and family made t-shirts to raise awareness and wore them to support him. What started as a local movement grew into something powerful: Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation.

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2013, the foundation has donated over $1 million to fund life-saving childhood cancer research. But just as importantly, they’ve helped spread awareness about the gold ribbon and the reality of childhood cancer.

Each September, Sammy’s Superheroes works hard to paint the town gold. We launch campaigns, hold events, and speak out to make sure families know they’re not alone—and to remind the world that our kids are worth more than 4%.

Awareness Leads to Action

Raising awareness may seem simple, but it leads to big things. When more people know about childhood cancer:

  • Donations increase to support research and family programs
  • More volunteers get involved to help organize events
  • Government leaders listen when we advocate for more funding
  • Communities come together to support local families in treatment

That’s why making the gold ribbon as well-known as pink is a mission that matters.

Let’s Shine a Light on Gold

Kids with cancer don’t need pity. They need awareness, funding, support, and a cure. They need people like you to raise their voices, to wear gold proudly, and to make sure no child fights alone.

This September and every month after, let’s make gold impossible to ignore.
